Completed in Kadıköy, Istanbul, in 2003, this architectural project for a tutoring school buildingcovered both design and construction. We drew the project and then took on construction supervision, so the idea on paper was realised in the building with the same determination.
The Tutoring School Building: Architecture and Façade
On the façade we combined glass curtain walling with composite panels: the glazing brings plenty of daylight inside, while the composite panels give the façade a clean, orderly look. Slender steel sunshades running along the floors add rhythm, and lights placed on them keep the building visible in the evening, with warm light around the windows making it stand out among its neighbours. These decisions give the building an identity that is both contemporary and institutional.
Function and Comfort in Educational Buildings
In a tutoring school, the classrooms where students spend most of the day are decisive, so we consider daylight, ventilation and circulation from the first stage. Corridors and stairs need to be easy to read, and we plan emergency exits from the start, so the building works smoothly both at busy class times and during evacuation. We apply the same principles to every educational building, reassessed for the conditions of each site.
Construction Supervision: From Drawing to Site
An architectural project does not end with the drawings; every detail has to be built on site as drawn. That is why we followed construction closely, checking material choices, façade details and junctions together with the contractor, so the lines of the façade rose with the precision we planned. On site visits we assessed solutions in place and redrew details where needed; construction supervision is the most important step in protecting a project's quality on site.
