In Kalamış, Istanbul, in 2006 we carried out a residential architecture project: Deniz Apt. We took on both the architectural project and the interior design of the building, and this integrated approach was the starting point that guided all our design decisions.
An Integrated Approach to Residential Architecture
We addressed the building's architectural character, designed the shared areas around it and planned the fixed interior design decisions of the apartments together. In a residential project, having the same team handle architecture and interiors makes the building's identity more consistent, and our material choices supported this consistency.
Consistency from Shared Areas to Apartments
Our design approach had a clear aim: to treat the building's architectural identity and its interiors as one. Starting from the shared areas, we carried the process through to the kitchens, bathrooms and other fixed elements of the apartments, creating a strong, characterful residential building for its time. As a platform showcasing leading residential interiors worldwide also shows, the unity of architecture and interiors directly affects the quality of residential projects. We prioritised this consistency in the relationship between façade and interior as well.
We kept the materials consistent with this unity, designing the details of the shared areas in harmony with the building's overall character and treating the fixed elements of the apartments with the same care. You can explore similar work on our architecture projects page. We carried the same language through shared circulation areas such as the stairs and corridors.
At Deniz Apt., CO Mimarlık treated architecture and interiors as a single whole, giving the building a strong identity for its time, a consistency residents feel in daily life. Over time, Deniz Apt. has become one of the characterful residential buildings of Kalamış, still carrying the architectural identity of its era today, and an example of the consistency that is one of our clearest signatures.
