OTLAK GASTRO PUB — Gastro Pub Design in Ankara
Otlak Gastro Pub is a gastro pub design project we prepared in 2020 for Tunus Street in Ankara. We designed it as the pub version of OT Kafe. The design was completed but not built. The project centred on socialising and different guest experiences, so we developed a spatial approach that goes beyond the classic restaurant and bar layout, aiming to bring eating and socialising together in a single space.
The Social Layout of Gastro Pub Design
At the heart of the design are large communal tables that let different groups come together in different ways, accompanied by varied seating groups and a characteristic tiered seating area. We treated the garden as a continuation of this social layout, creating a free, dynamic experience that flows from inside to outside, so guests can move naturally between different social scenarios as they walk through the space. This fluidity is critical to the success of the gastro pub concept.
Reuse and Technical Solutions
One of the project's notable solutions is the reuse of shipping containers as WC units, making creative, functional use of the available space. We addressed technical requirements, the idea of reuse and the indoor–outdoor relationship together, making this approach part of the venue's original character. Similar creative solutions can be seen in leading pub designs around the world as well. In the materials, we prioritised simplicity and durability so the space would stand up to heavy use.
A Holistic Gastro Pub Experience
At Otlak Gastro Pub, CO Mimarlık brought together four elements: gastronomy, socialising, outdoor use and technical solutions, planned to respond to different scenarios throughout the day. The venue was to take on a different role at every hour, from morning coffee to evening get-togethers, allowing the business to appeal to different customer profiles.
