This project for the Dortmund area is an example of contemporary Turkish restaurant design in Germany. It brings the traditional character of the BeyMen restaurant brand together with a contemporary, elegant approach, combining warmth, intimacy and modern details, with timeless materials supporting the character of the space. Our work with BeyMen began in 2016 with the Rotterdam branch and we then went on to design the BeyMen Steak Amsterdam and Osdorp branches as well. Dortmund is the German chapter of this long-standing collaboration.
Turkish Restaurant Design in Germany
The design interprets references from traditional Turkish culture in a contemporary architectural language, with warm materials and modern details working together. This allowed us to preserve the traditional character while creating a contemporary restaurant atmosphere. North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the most established regions for Turkish business in Germany, so in a Turkish restaurant here it is important to preserve an authentic identity while also offering a contemporary feel that meets local expectations. Regional Context and the Turkish Business Community
This region, which includes Dortmund, is one of the historical centres of Turkish entrepreneurship in Germany. Indeed, ATİAD, the umbrella organisation of Turkish businesses in Germany, is also headquartered in this region. A restaurant project like BeyMen Dortmund is therefore not only a space design; it also represents a brand that is part of this strong business community. This context required us to prioritise quality and authenticity in our design decisions, and we designed the project with the care befitting the standards of this community.
Ceiling Design: Aesthetics and Engineering Together
The ceiling design was not just an aesthetic decision. All of the building's mechanical services had to be accessible from the ceiling zone, so in some areas we used an aluminium open-cell ceiling to keep access to the services. We then turned this technical base into the main motif of the space with timber elements that branch out like trees. Red velvet seating and pendant glass lights complete the warm atmosphere.
The identity of the space brings the cultural warmth of Turkish cuisine together with a modern design approach. Materials and details support the restaurant's strong, original character, and the lighting and colour palette were planned to reinforce this balance. Every detail carries both a traditional and a modern language at once, a consistency we maintained in the floor finishes and furniture as well. We also planned accessibility from the very start of the design, according to the needs of the project.
For BeyMen Dortmund, CO Mimarlık created an original space that interprets the cultural identity of Turkish cuisine in a contemporary architectural language. The project strikes a balance that appeals both to the local Turkish community and to a wide German audience, and this balance is its most distinctive quality. In short, BeyMen Dortmund is a reference project that represents the brand strongly in a new country.
